Being a stay-at-home dad was both a blessing and a challenge. I faced many challenges, but one of the biggest ones was getting the kids to sleep. I could not get either of my kids to sleep easily. In fact, there were only a couple of ways: for Nolan, I had to drive him around in the car; for Davan, I either had to walk her in a stroller or drive her around in the car. Most of my time as a stay-at-home dad occurred when Nolan was in preschool, so I mainly had to deal with Davan’s naps.

Part of the challenge with the sleep issue with Davan was that I was trying to do a million things at once, and the last thing I wanted to do was go for a walk. Why couldn’t I just lay her down, maybe read a story and walk away? Because it never worked, that’s why. After lots of frustration I found the answer that turned this challenge into a blessing. The first step was to let go of the never-ending to-do list and accept that I wasn’t going to get it all done that particular day. The second step is the blessing. I love to fish and one of my local spots has a walking trail around it. Did you catch that? That’s right, a walking trail. So, right about nap-time, I would grab the stroller, fishing gear and Davan and head over to the trail. We’d walk around the lake for a while, and then I’d do some fishing. Nothing got done around the house, but I caught a few fish and Davan caught a nap.

Sometimes being a parent is about being creative. Mine may not have been the most productive solution, but I had a well-rested little girl who had a fun time with Daddy out in nature, and that has to count for something. We both had fun and the only frustration came when the fish weren’t biting, but I guess I can’t really complain about that! By now you’re probably asking what type of stroller I preferred for these excursions, right? I am so glad you asked – and here comes another shameless plug -the Urban Advantage stroller by Go-Go Babyz, of course! Why? Because it has an extra long canopy to keep the sun out, a large storage basket for my gear, a parent & child tray so Davan could have snacks and a drink and I could have my coffee, and…well you’ll just have to check it out for yourself; it’s a great stroller!

What about you? Anyone have any stories, tips, tricks or products that make your life easier as a stay- at-home parent? If so, please share!
