“Funny thing about weekends when you’re unemployed They don’t quite mean so much

Except you get to hang out with all your working friends”

Boise River

– Les Claypool, Primus

There I was…
Sitting in my chair…
Frantic…
Anxious…
Times running out…
Will I finish?…

Rushing to get the last few emails sent…
Oh, shoot, did I send that to wrong person?…
That’s not gonna be good…

Meanwhile, in the background…
The sweet sounds of arguing teenagers…
The barks and growls of hyper-active dogs…
The motivational shouts…
“We got to get going”…

Okay, okay, okay…
Five more minutes…
Wait, fifteen, I have to get an expedited order ready…
Forget it, just go without me.

Can you relate?
Anyone have a small business with a home office?
Then I’m sure you get it.

A couple months into the school year and the first week long break won’t come quick enough.
Then it’s the anticipation for Christmas Break.
Then, of course, come on summer!

Ahh, two and a half months of fun in the sun
Relaxing all day…
Short work days…
Short work weeks…
Camping, hiking, swimming, fishing…
You name it…
The last two weeks of school just won’t go by fast enough.

And then…
It comes…
Summer is here…
And all its chaos.

Not two weeks in and you can’t wait for school to start!
Structure…schedules…routine…
Peace…quiet…serenity…
AND…
Productivity!

Productivity just seems to disappear in the summer.
So many distractions with kids around all day…
All the various activities…
All the summer visitors…
I cross two things off my work list and add five more.
It’s never ending!

Can’t you just take a break?
Why can’t you go with us today?
When will you be done working?
When?…what?…how?…why?…
It just goes on and on…

And so does business. If I take a break, go today, stop working…
So does the business…It doesn’t run itself!
Oh, but I thought you could do whatever you want since you’re the boss…
What a nice thought…And, you’re right…
I can do whatever I want, but if I do I won’t be a business owner for long.

But, that is the life of a small business.
You have customers 365 days year, and they expect quick responses and quick solutions.
And that is okay, because without customers there is no business.

The bottom line is, I love summer time and I love being a small business owner…
Well, most of the time!
It just takes a bit more effort and discipline to schedule, juggle, & balance
In order to get my work done and be able to participate in some summer fun.

When your afternoon break consists of a Black Magic Cold Brew Coffee & a quick (2 hour) excursion to the river for a little rock diving and swimming to beat the heat and reset…
I’ll deal with a bit of chaos.

Talk Soon,
Kevin
