“One must maintain a

little bit of summer, even in the middle of winter. ”

– Henry David Thoreau

Well, it’s not winter yet but I know it will be here fast.

How do I know that?…

Because as I write this, the school year is already three weeks deep.

We are already heading into our first 3-day weekend.

In Part 1, Summertime Blues, I discussed the chaos that comes with summer break.

Remember?…

I wrote about what it’s like being a small business owner and parent during summer?

Trying to get everything d

one…

Trying to focus and put in a solid block of work time…

All the while the kids are chomping at the bit..

“Can we go now?”

“Wanna go fishing today?”

“When will you be done working?”…

All while I read emails, take calls, Facebook Messenger (don’t get me started!)

Dealing with customers…

“Will this work with…?”

“How do I attach…

.?”

“When will you have more…?”

“When will my order get here?”…

Sounds fun right?

It is, you just need to know how to navigate and manage the chaos…

But, as I wrote in part 1, once you’re in the thick of Summer you just can’t wait to get out!

So, back to where I started…

School is back in session so now the chaos ends!…

Back to full, productive work days…

Then it hits me…

The school year is just another form of chaos…

Morning drop-off…

Afternoon pickup…

Traffic control…

Angry, frustrated pare

nts…

“You can’t park there”…

“keep moving…no getting out to pick up your kids”…

“you can’t put nuts in your child’s lunch”…

But wait, there’s more…

Back to school night…

New parent meet & greet…

Sports orientations…

On and on and

on and on…

But wait, why is it so calm this morning?

Why am I still in my PJs at 6:30 working?

Ahhh yes, this year is different…

My son can now drive to school!

No more crazy drop offs or pickups…

He can take over…

The reality is this…

Each different season or time of year provides a mixed bag…

Each bring some fun & excitement, chaos & challenges, and so on…

All this is just amplified a bit as a small business owner.

Do I long for the endless summer?

In reality no, but in fantasy, yes!

My mind screams “don’t let it end!”

Give the long days & hours of endless sunshine…

I’ll find a way to be productive and partake in all the fun family activities!

What this has taught me to do is be present…

Enjoy the moment and whatever season or stage of life it is…

Whether it’s the cold, short days of winter…

The LOOOONG, hot days of summer…

The fun & frantic years of elementary school…

Or the first years

of high school…

It all comes to end at some point, but if we are lucky, it will be back again next year.

Time flies…before you know it, your first born is driving!

As nice as that can be, it also signifies a major step toward independence.

They grow up so fast!

So what I really don’t want to let end?…

Is everything I “complained” about…

It’s crazy & chaotic, yet fun and inspiring!

I wouldn’t trade it. Why?…

Because, I might not have always enjoyed it…

But at least I was able to participate and experience it.

That is what makes being a business owner great.

That is what makes is all worth it!

Talk Soon,

Kevin
